Print Server Proxy Installation and Configuration Instructions

Below are instructions to install the Tricerat Simplify Print Server Proxy service.  The Simplify Print Server Proxy is a software component from Tricerat to better support print server printing in remote, fire-walled environments.  Configuring the Simplify Print Server Proxy will allow print jobs to traverse WAN environments to a remote print server.  The instructions should be followed as described below to prevent configuration issues.

Prerequisites

These instructions assume you have the following configured:

  • An existing print server at the remote site, with the Simplify Print Server Agent installed

  • An instance of Simplify Console installed in the local/private/HQ site with a Simplify database

Setting up the Internal Proxy Server

The Internal Proxy Server component will go on a server within local/private/HQ site, the site with the SQL Server and the Simplify database.  It should be installed on a Windows Server OS machine that is external facing (to the internet), and one without the Simplify Print Server Agent current installed.

  1. Run the SimplifyPrintServerProxy.exe installer

  2. Select the install directory, agree to the license terms, then click Next

  3. Select the Internal model, then click Next

  4. Configure your preferred ports, or keep the defaults, make a note of each, then click Next

    1. The Internal Proxy Port will listen for internal connections in the local site

    2. The Remote Proxy Port is the listening port for incoming, external connections
*Non-standard ports will require manual firewall policy changes and configurations*

  5. The Internal Proxy Server will be installed

  6. Click Finish

Setting up the Remote Proxy Server

The Remote Proxy Server component will go on a machine within the remote/external site, the site with the destination print server.  It can be installed on any Windows NT6 OS, but it recommended to be installed on a server OS.

  1. Run the SimplifyPrintServerProxy.exe installer

  2. Select the install directory, agree to the license terms, then click Next

  3. Select the Remote model, then click Next

  4. Remote Proxy Details:

    1. Group: Create a Group name and copy it down

    2. ID: Copy down the ID generated - This is randomly generated, and although we highly recommend against it, can be changed

    3. Internal Proxy Address: Enter the external facing FQDN or IP address of the Internal Proxy Server above

    4. Internal Proxy Port: This should be the same port number as the Remote Proxy Port configured during the Internal Proxy Server install
*Non-standard ports will require manual firewall policy changes and configurations*

  5. Click Next

  6. Click Install

  7. The Remote Proxy Server will be installed

  8. Click Finish

Setting up the Remote Print Server in Simplify Console

  1. Open the Simplify Console (one within the local/HQ site)

  2. Under the Objects pane, right click v6 Print Server and select New Object

  3. Rename the New Object to something descriptive of the remote print server

  4. Select the Print Server Proxy tab:

    1. Hit the check box for User a proxy for print server

    2. Internal Proxy Address: The FQDN or IP address of the Internal Proxy Server, the one within the local/HQ site

    3. Internal Proxy Port: The Internal Proxy Port configured during the Internal Proxy Server installation (default 3550)

    4. Proxy Group: The Group name configured during the Remote Proxy Server installation

    5. Proxy ID: The ID generated during the Remote Proxy Server installation

  5. Click the General tab

    1. Hostname or IP: The FQDN or IP of the Remote Proxy Server at the remote site

    2. Port: The port used by the Simplify Print Server Agent internally in the remote site. This would have been configured during the Simplify Print Server Agent install, and the default is 3550

  6. Click the blue Apply Changes button at the top of the Objects Pane

  7. Click Test Connection to verify a connection to the remote print server

  8. If the test is successful, you can click Refresh All Printers and proceed as normal.
