Arm64 Support for Tricerat ScrewDrivers
Overview
As the computing industry progresses towards more energy-efficient and powerful architectures, Arm64 devices have become increasingly prevalent. Tricerat acknowledges this shift and is actively working to enhance ScrewDrivers' compatibility with Arm64 platforms. This article outlines the current state of Arm64 support in ScrewDrivers version 7.7 and provides insights into upcoming developments.
Current Support in Version 7.7
ScrewDrivers Endpoint Client:
Installation: The Endpoint Client can be installed on Arm64 devices with the following limitations:
Limitations: If the remote desktop client (e.g., mstsc.exe, Citrix Workspace) is an Arm64 binary, the ScrewDrivers plugin will not run. Consequently, client printers will not be redirected to the remote session.
Default Behavior: On Windows Arm devices, the default mstsc (Remote Desktop Connection) is an Arm64 application. This means ScrewDrivers printers will not build when connecting to remote sessions using these devices.
ScrewDrivers Pro and Enterprise Agents:
Currently, there is no support for Arm64 architecture in the Pro or Enterprise agents. These agents cannot be installed on Arm64 devices at this time.
Upcoming Enhancements
Native Arm64 Support for Endpoint Client:
Tricerat is actively developing native Arm64 support for the ScrewDrivers Endpoint Client.
Release Timeline: This enhancement is expected to be included in an upcoming maintenance release.
Benefits:
Seamless Printer Redirection: Users will be able to redirect client printers in remote sessions, even when using Arm64 remote desktop clients.
Improved Compatibility: Enhanced integration with Arm64 applications and devices.
Support for Pro and Enterprise Agents:
On the Roadmap: While not currently available, support for the Pro and Enterprise agents on Arm64 is planned for future development.
Release Date: There is no confirmed release date at this time.
Recommendations for Users
Interim Solutions:
Use x86 Remote Desktop Clients: If possible, use an x86/x64 version of your remote desktop client on Arm64 devices to enable the ScrewDrivers plugin to run.
Use the ScrewDrivers TCP client with a ScrewDrivers Gateway server.
Stay Updated: Keep an eye on official Tricerat communications for announcements regarding the release of native Arm64 support.
